Why I Moved Away from SLS & ALS

I eventually found a shampoo free from SLS and ALS that I liked. But it was shipped from Australia and packaged in plastic. If I cared about ingredients, I had to care about sustainability too. So once again — I made my own.

For some people this causes no issue. For others — especially those prone to dryness, sensitivity or eczema — repeated exposure may contribute to irritation.

What I Selected — And Why

If I cared about ingredients, I had to care about sustainability too. Our body and scalp is skin — it deserves the same respect as the face. I formulated these products to prioritise barrier integrity without compromising on effective cleansing.

Mild, Plant-Derived Cleansers

Chosen for effective cleansing without aggressive lipid stripping or barrier disruption.

Skin-Supportive Botanicals

A selection of extracts chosen for their calming and conditioning properties to support the microbiome.

No Silicone Dependency

No artificial coating. What you feel is your healthy hair — not a synthetic film.

Aluminium Packaging

Reduced plastic footprint and lower transport impact. Designed with intentional refill in mind.

MADE MY OWN

The Hand Wash

This hand wash begins with a traditional plant-based Castile hand soap — made from vegetable oils rather than synthetic surfactants.

From there, the formula is carefully balanced with skin-supporting ingredients to maintain comfort, reduce dryness and provide a subtle botanical freshness.

It cleans effectively.
It rinses easily.
It leaves hands feeling clean — not stripped.

Nothing decorative.
Nothing excessive.
Nothing added simply for marketing.

Why It Matters

Hand washing happens multiple times a day.
What sits on your sink should be something you trust — especially in a family home.

This isn’t about extremes.
It’s about being thoughtful about repeated exposure.

Small rituals add up.

What You Won’t Find

MADE MY OWN

Shampoo

My search for a better shampoo didn’t begin as a business idea. It began in the shower.

My hair had started thinning. Clumps were coming out in my hands as I washed it. At first, I blamed hormones. Stress. Life.

But I began to question something else: What was I repeatedly applying to my scalp? I’ve always been an eczema sufferer, so I’ve long understood how important barrier integrity is. The scalp is skin — and it deserves the same respect as the face.

Scalp Health & Hair Shedding

Healthy hair depends on:

Balanced Cleansing

Preserving the essential oils while effectively removing pollutants that block follicular respiration.

Intact Barrier Function

A healthy stratum corneum on the scalp is the primary defense against moisture loss and irritants.

Controlled Inflammatory Signalling

Minimizing triggers for chronic stress pathways that can lead to follicle dormancy and thinning.

A Supported Scalp Microbiome

Balanced ecosystems of microbes promote long-term defense and a healthy foundation for hair growth.

The Hidden Adjustment Phase

Many conventional shampoos contain silicones and synthetic conditioning polymers. These form films around the hair shaft, creating instant slip and shine.

When removed, hair can temporarily feel:

  • Greasy
  • Limp
  • Heavy
  • Less smooth
This isn’t damage. It’s recalibration.

Which is why I am formulating a Transition Shampoo — designed to gently clarify silicone build-up while supporting gradual scalp balance.

Made My Own

Conditioner

In Formulation

Finding a shampoo I felt comfortable with was achievable. Finding a conditioner that left my hair genuinely silky — without compromising on what mattered to me — has been far more challenging.

I assumed it would be simple. It wasn’t.

Most conditioners, even those described as “natural” or “clean”, rely on familiar preservation systems and performance chemistry. And while these ingredients are approved and widely used, I found myself pausing when I looked more closely.

The ingredient I kept encountering was phenoxyethanol.

The Reality of Conditioner

Conditioner is not just a cosmetic extra. It reduces friction, lowers breakage, and protects the hair fibre during combing. Healthy hair is not simply about shine — it is about structural integrity.

Where I Am Now

I am currently exploring alternative preservation systems that are effective within specific pH ranges, support stability, and maintain scalp comfort. This involves careful testing, refinement, and patience.

True formulation cannot be rushed.

Body Wash

Made My Own

Designed for skin.

For a time, I used shampoo as body wash because I couldn’t find a shower gel I trusted.

Many body washes rely on strong degreasing surfactants that can increase transepidermal water loss (TEWL).

This formula is adjusted specifically for daily skin cleansing. It is a carefully balanced botanical body cleanser made with gentle plant-derived surfactants and organic aloe vera. Avocado oil and panthenol support hydration and post-wash comfort, leaving skin feeling clean, balanced and naturally conditioned. Fragranced only with essential oils.

  • Mild, plant-derived cleansers
  • Essential oil fragrance only
  • No SLS or ALS
  • No synthetic fragrance
  • Balanced pH

Clean does not need to feel tight.
